Janna, sometimes that’s normal for that age girl

Our non CAH daughter is eight and has just put on her pre pubertal puppy fat.  Our pediatrician was not concerned and discouraged me from having her "diet" or eat less amounts.   Frankly I was afraid she’d get teased, but she’s fine.  He did say to make sure her self esteem is doing good because apparently this is rougher emotionally for girls than it is boys because of peer teasing.  It seems some of the other girl’s bodies are doing the same things.  One thing he did mention is to make sure she’s getting the proper amount of fluids (juice, vit D milk, water, gatorade) so her body runs like a well oiled machine.  Sometimes their hunger and thirst cues get mixed up.   He also discouraged us from using 2% or skim milk because it didn’t have enough vitamin D to help the calcium absorption in the bones.

On a side note, Jake our four year old son does have CAH and was over suppressed for about a year.  We did some tweaking with our endocrinologist and his levels popped into place.  Now the excess weight is coming off very slowly but it may be due to a more normal appetite.  Sometimes the endocrinologist has to slow a moving train with these kids to slow their bone aging.  Last exam Jake’s bone age had only grown a half a year instead of a year and it caught him up a bit (not by much, but a bit).  He has a bone age of 7.  Some of that in my mind makes me think it was due to the over suppression.  Just a hunch.  Having him a little chubby now (but reducing) to slow the rapid bone aging train down seems valid to me.  I could be wrong though.  If it’s a problem, or she is concerned about it I would definitely bring it up in the appointment.  Another thing I thought I’d mention, check and see if her ankles are swollen.  Jake got sick too often with colds and viruses and had frequent headaches and a huge appetite.  Seems kind of silly, but it’s just what I noticed with him.

Good luck at the appointment.
