Carol M.Hi Monica,
I’m assuming that your doctor is talking about doing a LHRH stimulation test, right? If so, I believe that you can simulate this test using Lupron or another GnRH agonist, instead of Factrel. I’m sure the protocol for testing and interpreting results is somewhat different, but I think you can get the same info. I also remember my son’s doctor mentioning a while ago that it was possible to simulate an LHRH test, using Lupron.
Also, below is a snippet from the peds-endo website, re. this issue. While it looks like there is a definite shortage of Factrel, it doesn’t sound like it’s been completely discontinued, but who knows. If you go to the pens website that is listed, you’ll be able to find several good sources to contact for further information about protocols. Down the page, there is also an earlier thread on this topic. Look for the words "GnRH testing."
Good luck!
"This message is in response to the numerous questions about the
availability of Factrel and TRH. For more information, please contact one
of the D&T committee members.
1) Factrel -- Wyeth Ayerst is allocating one vial of Factrel per month to
customers. Any customer who desires more vials due to medical need will
be transferred to Medical Affairs to determine if additional allocation is
warranted. The shortage is apparently due to manufacturing difficulties.
Customer Service did not know how long before this shortage is resolved.
.........There is a recent series of messages among clinicians discussing
alternatives to Factrel at http://www.pens.org/wwwboard/messages/152.html.
Lastly, short acting leuprolide (not depot) can be used instead of Factrel
for testing....."
