AimeeHi Bebe,
To quote you," b/c genetically they are not male or female" I just wanted to check and make sure that you do know that they weren’t talking about CAH in any of it’s forms. There are of course other birth defects that produce mixed genetic results but no need to go through them here.
Regardless of the CAH, Locah, 3-beta, Simple Virilizing, Salt- wasting ect. Men with CAH only have male chromosomes, male internal and external organs and that’s it. Females with CAH regardless of the kind only have female chromosomes, female internal organs and this is the tricky part most women with CAH are born with run of the mill average genitals, many have rather large genitals (hooray for them ! lol ), a few were born with genitals that are basically what the heck is that? ambiguous if you may. Then fewer still are born with genitals that from the external appearance look male but it is soon discovered that the baby is not a boy because they become very sick because of the lack of cortisol or newborn tests were done that discovered the CAH. Doctors feel for palable testes and find that there aren’t any, do ultra-sound and realize that it is just a girl with CAH and only female chromosomes . Cool, but still no Zebra. Underneath the virilization is just a female who came to be that way because there was no cortisol at all in her body in utero to suppress the androgens.
As for that discovery channel show, it’s scary that doctors and parents try to fit people into a gender that they might not belong to. I’m aware of some people that have mixed chromosomes they are are all unique in their own way, no two are alike. After all the medling by the doctors eventually they switched to the gender they were most comfortable with. They are interesting and make many good points that took a long time for some doctors to listen to.
