re: Desperate... my CAH son might be deaf!

Was your son in the hospital for any length of time?  I ask this because when my son was born he was in the hospital for 28 days.  He was subjected to all those bells and whistles for all that time.  When they released him they said that they thought he might have some hearing loss but we were just happy to get him home with us.

I watched him and tested him by banging on pots and pans behind him and he didn’t respond.  We yelled at the top of our lungs and he didn’t even flinch.  This worried us tremendously because my 1st born would jump as if she was electricuted if a pin dropped.

One day I was watching his eyes and he seemed to be interacting with others just fine.  He was taking in all that was around him.  He was participating appropriately. I got the idea to go around the corner and whisper his name and to my surprise, he whipped his head around and smiled at me.  We came to the conclusion that he had gotten used to all the loud noises around him and learned to tune them out (from his stay in the hospital).  After that point things became more "normal".

Last year the school system said that he failed their hearing test so we took him to our pediatrician.  He told us that he passed just fine and that the schools sometimes can read the results incorrectly.

He is 7 years old now and tells us that he hears "funny" in one ear.  He says that when someone says bear he hears pear.  We also noticed that he has to turn the volumn up on everything he does.

We are making another appointment for a hearing test to see where we stand today.  I just thought I’d share our experience with you to see if it helps you in any way.

I wish you and your child good luck.
