Anne-MarieI think because newborns have tiny ears, when there is any amount of swelling due to infection inside the ear, it is far more likely to cause deafness I would have thought, since the ear canal is very small. Much smaller than an older childs.
Ashley has very small ears externally, and apparently, the internal ear is smaller than average too. I think that is why ear infections seem to be more common in smaller children and toddlers. Doesn’t really take much when they get a cold to cause an accumulation of discharge which doesn’t perhaps get absorbed or heal itself as effectively as what it would with a larger ear canal I would have thought. Could far more easily cause a problem with deafness in newborns or children with smaller ears (like glue ear) if anti biotics do not rectify that situation.
One of the reasons that I tried homeopathic remedies the last time Tyler had an ear infection was because he had been on several courses of anti-biotics and each course seemed to make ear infection come back with avengance. I was just concerned, that they may be aggravating the problem.
Is baby on anti-biotics? Hope that they clear it up anyway.
