re: LynnT, can you teach an old dog new tricks?

Hi Adina,  I’m glad to hear from you again.  Remember, I am no expert in this area, but it sounds to me like Sugar has all the qualities that are necessary for alerting you.  Now, it is your turn.  You need to train yourselves to respond, or notice when she is signaling you for an alert.  With that in mind, you wouldn’t be teaching an old DOG new tricks, you would be teaching an old FAMILY new tricks.(:>)

The key then is to reward her like crazy when she does this by petting her and/or praising her and perhaps even give her a little treat.  Time is of the essence though and she must be praised AS she is doing the deed.

As Ryan gets older he has fewer crisis so our window of opportunity is small (thank God) but she will also be there to help him with his mood swings as I had mentioned before.

This is all new territory for CAH specifically, but we will give it the good old college try!  If the enhancement training works with Lily, she may then be able to teach new puppies to alert to these things.

Anything that might help the parents (even if it is down the road) is all good!

P.S.  Give Sugar an extra treat from me.
