Injection and ER visit
Nov. 27th, 2002   4:09pm
Hi all,

Olivia had her 4-year check-up on Monday. At that time she received 3 vaccines (DTP, Polio and MMR). She has never had a reaction of any type to any of her vaccinations. But it appears that she might have this time. Monday afternoon she started running a 100+ fever (while we were trying to get Christmas pictures taken). When we got home it was about 100.5 so I gave her a stress dose of Cortef and Tylenol. Other than a headache, she said she was feeling OK. Less than an hour later she vomited everything. I waited about 20 minutes, but since her tummy still hurt and the fever was now 101, I gave her an injection and called the ped endo on call. The shot went much better -- very little pain and no blood! Ped endo said to keep an eye on her. At 9 pm when I still hadn’t been able to keep a sip of anything down her (no fluids since before 4) and the fever was up to 103+, the ped endo sent us to the ER for IV fluids. She was lethargic by the time we got there (I sure part was just being tired). Blood work was check (came back fine) and they started an IV as had been ordered by ped endo. By the time the IV was done, she was having this great conversation with the nurse about IV’s, blood and bandaids. (I could hardly keep from laughing).

The next morning she woke with a 104+ fever. Fortunately she was able to keep down the Tylenol. Even though the dex injection will last 24-hours, our endocrine nurse suggested that I give her a stress dose of Cortef. The Cortef made all the difference in the world (or so it would appear). After having the Tylenol in her system for 1 1/2 hours the temp had only dropped 2 degrees. Within 30 minutes of taking the Cortef the temp droped below 101. I’m going to talk with our ped endo about this at our January visit.

Has anyone ever experienced something like this, where you "know" there should be enough steroid in the system, but additional seems to make a difference?

Best regards,

Janet
