GretchenKate,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I sent you an e-mail and hope to hear more from you.
In the meantime, I found it interesting that you could do both CAH testing and gender determination. Our counselors had indicated that because the first is on the gene-level and the second chromosonal, it was not possible to do both. I wonder how this was done.
Second, $5000 is absolutely an incredible price. Our calculations have been that it would cost at least ~$15,000 and more like $20,000 to do IVFw/PGD here in the US. The PGD part is cheap ($1800) but the IVF is very expensive.
As for testing for other conditions, indeed, it does seem that the embryos can be tested only for CAH due to the limited amount of DNA available. It is our understanding that we would be tested for a number of genetic conditions before the procedure - Cystic Fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, etc. - Not the eggs, sperm or embryos but rather the parents-to-be would be tested. Then of course we would do CVS through which the fetus would be checked for Downs and other genetic mutations that could not be tested for in advance.
