Qusetion about late onset CAH and non salt wasters
Dec. 4th, 2002   11:51am

I was just wondering about late onset and non salt wasters. Our son is a salt waster and was diagnosed at 6  weeks because of severe dehydration and what we took him to the hospital thinking was a bad case of the flu.

Now my nephew and his wife have a baby who just turned 3 months and this week he has been sick since last weekend. He ran a fever and has had diarrhea and just yesterday started vomiting.

They took him to the emergency room and they drew blood and ran tests but found nothing wrong. Since Caleb had signs that were not hard to see I don’t know if this little guy is just ill or maybe they should test him for CAH.

Does this sound like what any non salt wasters have went through? Also this guy is a BIG boy. Like I said he is 3 months old and is already the size of our 7 month old. He was a normal weight when he was born 8 lbs 7 oz ( that is normal for our family as all of our children were over 8 1/2 pounds) and he was 24" long. I just wonder now if this might be another area that should clue us in??

They told their ped. on their first visit but I doubt that it would even cross their minds if it isn’t brought up again. Heck the doctor that saw Caleb the week before we took him into the ER and he was diagnosed had seen children with CAH before and it never crossed her mind and she sent us home telling us that he just was getting over a bad case of the flu.

I hate the thought that they don’t test yet in our state but at least I feel better knowing I can come here and find some answers to these questions.

I will keep checking back during the day.  Thanks so much. This really worries me about the little guy.
