MinooGrowth Hormone (GH) is a miracle in growth hormone deficient individuals. In the past 8 years, it has been used in clinical trials for all other kinds of indications with variable success. Dr. New’s hypothesis that GH can help growth in CAH children was somewhat controversial but her recent data shows that it seemed to have helped kids who have advanced bone age. It is critical to administer GH therapy before start of puberty to get maximum benefit from it. My personal opinion on GH is that if your child has lost a lot of height potential, and you feel that her potential adult height may interfere with her functioning in our society made for people 5’4" and over (at least at 5’2", that is what it feels like to me!), you may want to consider it. Bear in mind that it is "experimental" as applied to growth in CAH, and therefore, will not be paid for by any insurance. You would have to go to Dr. New for this treatment. I am not sure what dosing schedule they are using for their current study, but I believe their earlier work involved sub Q injections 6 days a week, (which you can give yourself, but try convincing a 5 year old why she need to get poked everyday!) I am also not sure whether the general care for the CAH needs to be transferred to her as well (instead of your local endo.)
Please bear in mind that there are no wrong decisions to make. You have to weigh your child’s comfort and everyday life now vs in the future and make a decision that you are comfortable with.
This part is in jest folks:
At some point in your child’s life you are going to be blamed for the decision you made, no matter which one it is; and at some point in her life you may get an appreciation for the decision you made, no matter which one it is.
Good luck!:)
