Danny CarltonThis my script. I wrote it from scratch. I have absolute control over it. While an earlier (less developed) version of this script was being used as a free message board site, it was called the best message board script on the internet by both users, board admins and site reviewers. Why would we give up that? We’d lose the archives, as well, and the size of the archives is the problem. Currently there are over 20,000 messages (over 18M) in three and a half years worth of archives (that’s not counting the 1600+ message currently on the main board. 2300+ if you count all the boards). It’s extremely hard to index 20,000+ individual pages for a search engine. I let my computer work at it with a downloadable script, for 4 hours, and it had only indexed a small fraction of the archives. (I have a AMD K6-2 with a 400mHz processor and 256M ram, so it’s not that slow)
I’m very familiar with other message board sites and scripts, and (if I do say so myself) this is by far the best on the internet. Since it’s mine, I can allow the archives to remain. All the other sites I know of limit the size of archives. I recently had to double my web host disk capacity in order to accomodate the growth, but it’s still much, much cheaper than what pay (infopop) boards charge for limited archives. I can’t imagine any of them allowing someone to bring in 18M worth of archives.
