Losing weight when on steroids

I’ve had several people email me with questions about how I lost weight while on prednisone so I thought I’d answer them all in one shot on here.

1:  First thing I did was talk to my endo and make sure I wasn’t being overmedicated.  We played with my medicine for several months and realized I was being overmedicated.

2:  I started exercising.  I walked at 3.5 miles at least 4 times a week.  When that got easy, I added hand weights of 1 1/2 pounds.

3:  I cut down my portions and ate lots more fruits and veggies.  I only eat about 5 servings of carbs per day, and I shopped around for bread that is lower cal/high fiber.  I keep fresh fruit and veggies around, and eat them with lo cal salad dressing.

4:  When I eat fast food, which I sometimes have to, I eat at Subway, or I get salads from MickeyDs or BK.

5.  As I started to lose weight, my endo and I lowered my medicine even more because my stress level decreased, and so did my weight.  ;)  I’m now down to 7.5 mg per day on Prednisone (5 wasn’t enough) and half a tablet of florinef.

6.  I joined Weight Watchers.  Although I don’t follow their points plan to the letter, it’s great because it gives you a good idea of what serving sizes are.  (Contrary to popular belief a Big Mac is NOT a single serving hamburger).  It’s also great for the support. There were many people in the meetings who had gained weight because of injuries, or because they were on steroids for various medical problems.  The support is great and you get really good recipes too!

7.  In short, I made a lifestyle change just like anyone else who wants to lose weight and keep it off must.  I admit, it’s harder when on steroids, but if I as a junk food junkie computer addict can, anyone can.
