Sue G.’s baby had a milk allergy...

Check the archives, but I think her daughter was vomiting and had some diaper problems.  I’ve heard sneezing and hives or little pimply rashes around the outside of the mouth are a good indicator too.   Savannah used to vomit whenever I fed her sweet potatoes, but we’ve tried them since she got a little older and she seems to be fine on them now.  I heard of a boy at Jake’s tot gym class who was allergic to wheat and he used to vomit if he ate anything with wheat, wheat flour or wheat germ in it.  My cousin was allergic to pickles and they’d make her face swell up.  So I guess different allergies affect people differently.

As far as the obesity question, I would check with the doctor to make sure the dosage isn’t too high.  If the dosage is fine, then maybe there are other concerns such as hypothyroid.  Some of these CAH kids have more than just CAH.  It may seem hard to fathom because our direct focus as parents usually has been only on the CAH (as it’s a big enough job to have to tackle in the first place).  In otherwords:  you miss seeing the bee on the zebra because you get lost in looking at all the stripes; stand too closely and you can get both kicked by the zebra and stung by the bee.  Jake our four year old SWCAH son is borderline asthmatic but that has absolutely nothing to do with his CAH.  Just another genetic glitch.  It’s worth finding out though if the obesity might be as a result of something else (diabetes, hypothyroid, or various other problems).  Type in "obesity" or other symptom key words that have concerned you on WebMD.com and see what you come up with.  Like for instance with Jake, I might type "wheezing", "shortness of breath" and things like that.  If you see anything remotely familiar, print it or jot it down to give to the doctor.  We read about CAH about a month or so before Savannah was born because Jake had one or two tiny pubic hairs and was extra tall (at age three) by typing in key words like "early pubic hair" on WebMD.  We brought it up to the pediatrician and he just said Jake was just hairy because he’s part Hispanic.  If we’d have only known then what we know now.  By the way, he has one of the top ten pediatrician’s in the Phoenix metropolitan area.  Doctors even take their kids to him.  He just missed it; so even the good ones can get it wrong sometimes.  That’s why they need parents who keep on top of things and keep asking questions.

Good luck,

Adina
