I would let him try it - if you don’t you will be "the world’s worst Mum".  You can’t wrap them up in cotton wool - you need to let them feel normal and to do this just let them be children - they soon learn what they can and can’t do - just keep the emergency kit nearby for accidents and if you’re not around then have instructions printed so that they can be followed.
