re: cortisol replacement during surgery

Michelle,

I normally take 0.25mg of dex.  I’ve had a couple of surgeries (4 c-sections and one ear/nose procedure).  In all the surgeries, I’ve taken my normal dose up until I enter the hospital.  I think (I’ll have to see if I can find my letter from the endo) they’ve given me 60mg of hydrocortisone via IV.  After they remove the IV, I take 4 times my normal dose for a couple of days.  Then I ramp down something like this:

   Post surgery

Days 1-4   -  Four times the dose (1.0mg of dex)

Days 5-7  - Three times the dose (0.75mg)

Days 8-10 - Two times the dose (0.5mg)

       Day 11   - One and a half (0.375mg)

 Then back to normal.

Remember, everyone is different.  Good luck!
