A few months ago my husband and I notice the onset of pubic hair growth and a bit of body odor under one of my three-year-old daughter’s arms. Blood tests were performed. Unfortunately, I’m not sure exactly which hormones, etc., were tested (testosterone was one); however, only one returned elevated - DHEA. Her DHEA level was elevated to 89 (from what I understand "normal levels" are between 0-50?!?). This then lead to a bone age test, which returned at three years six months (her chronological age is three years four months), which is apparently normal. Although we are scheduled to see a pediatric endocrinologist very soon, after our pediatrician reviewed the results with the endo., he mentioned CAH might be a possibility. First of all, can anyone tell me what it means if her DHEA level is elevated? Secondly, our state requires prescreening for several birth defects, including CAH - everything was normal! Is it possible that she really has CAH or could it be Late Onset CAH. Also, can her bone age continue to advance? Lastly, I do not want her medicated if CAH is not a confirmed diagnosis. Do any of you have any suggestions? Should I demand an ACTH stimulation test? Any suggestions you may have are greatly appreciated, as this is all very new, confusing and scary! Thanks JDeanna
