carrieCarter was diagnosed when he was about 9 days old. He was near dying; we were first time parents and didn’t know how sick he was. Of course we only stayed 24 hours in the hospital, and if I ever have another child I will stay longer. Anyway, Carter weighed 6lbs. 12 at birth, but once we went home he started losing weight. Thank God the hospital i delivered at required parents to bring their baby back in two days for a healthy baby check up. At the checkup it showed that he had lost too much weight and his bilirubin was up. They told us to come back the next day. We ended up going everyday for a week. Finally, they told us we needed to take him to his peditrician. When we went in he was down to 5.4. At once our doctor begin running tests. Carter had been tested by newborn screening, but he was deathly ill before these tests came back. Our wonderful doc. diagnosed him without the tests, and once they returned, they confirmed his diagnosis. We stayed in the hospital for a week getting him stabilized, and when he was 3 weeks old we made our first trip to Dallas to see a ped. endo. We now make the 4 hour trip every 3 months. But we have realized that so far Carter’s life has been like any other healthy child’s other than the extra trips to the doc. for blood work. Not to say that that is easy because it kills me every time we have to see him get stuck.
Today my beautiful boy turned two. By the way he is also a salt waster.
God Bless You
Carrie
