re: Developmental delays

Hi Kristen,

My daughter was diagnosed at 15-months. As a side note, she was born in China and came home at 7 1/2 months. At her first ped appointment the dr realized that something was wrong due to her not having a vaginal opening. Once it was determined that she didn’t just have fused labia, there was some delay in getting a diagnosis since she is has the 11-beta deficiency and not the 21-hydroxylase.

The developmental delays that I noticed with Olivia were directly attributal to living in an orphanage. At 7 1/2 months when placed in the sitting position, she could not sit by herself (which she should have been able to do). She had a hard time learning to take food (cereal had been put in the bottle). By about 9 to 10 months she was were she should be on most of the developmental milestones. She started walking right about 12-13 months. The best of my recolection, I never had any concerns about her verbal skills. (Though it did take a long time before she would call me any form of "mom". We figured this was since I am a single mom and she was at the time the only child, she never heard anyone call me mom :-)

At diagnosis her bone age was 2 to 2.5 years and her chronological age was 15-months (she was in the 97% for height, 25% for weight). Last year her bone age came back right at or slightly below the chronological age. Her weight is now at the 50% mark and her height is somewhere between the 25%-50%. Her ped endo is very happy with the growth.

If you have any other questions, let me know. I hope this helps.

Best regards,

Janet
