re: to operate or not to operate?

Jaime,

My daughter will need a vagnioplasty (sp?). To make a very long story shorter, the ped urologist and I decided to hold off on her surgery for a wide variety of reasons. Her vagina connects into her urethra about mid-way up and there is no vaginal opening. Olivia is now 4. When we had our last appointment with the ped urologist (a truly wonderful man who is now in Grand Rapids), he indicated that there is some research going on at Riley Children’s Hosptial in Indianapolis. They are working on the techniques where the vagina is connected high up. He felt that this could be appropriate for my daughter. We are going to wait several more years. One big reason to wait is that the ped urologist who left was uncertain if there was anyone in St. Louis who was qualified to do the surgery (he included himself in this statement!). Hard telling what the next years will bring. Hopefully we won’t have to travel, but if we do, it will work.

Best regards,

Janet
