I am pretty sure Lydia is right here on the exemption point.  As long as you have the medical documentation you should be able to get any exemption you need.  I have been in the US for a few years so missed the saturation of the World Cup over the summer but I am remember something about Paul Scoles(?) and his exemption papers regarding his asthma medication. I am sure there is a way in for your son and I hope you get it sorted quickly because it is great he is doing so well.TC
