KareYes, taking steroids like our CAH kids do can be tricky. For some reason, the pox can "take over".
We went through "the pox" 2 years ago...almost to the day. Between our doctor and us, we decided NOT to double her dose of cortef....just roughly 1.5’d it (didn’t want to suppress the immune system too much and give the pox a chance to go crazy).
An excellent idea our endo had a year prior to the actual pox was to keep an anti-vital on hand (she had been exposed the previous year...which is when the endo came up with the ’let’s keep an anti-viral on-hand’ idea). It’s called acyclovir (maybe trade name Zovirax?). Anti-virals need to be taken within about 24-48 hrs to really do the most good. We had it on hand...started giving it to her when she broke out with the pox.....and had a "normal" case.
Now, she didn’t break out in a typical fashion....she broke out veeeerrrrrrrryyyyy slowly. She started on a Weds afternoon with ONE odd-looking spot (which we later figured out was chicken pox) and a temp of 101. She had a few more spots on Thursday. She wasn’t full-blown until Friday. I even had her at the doctor’s on Thursday to figure out what the couple spots were....they took blood, etc. By Friday morning she was definitely ’spotted’.
