Well, when your working from the angle of getting fat to trim, you need to do more than you normally would on the journey there.  Maintenance is slightly easier LOL!  Apparently only one session in the gym per week will keep these muscles in check.  In fact less is more according to the late Mike Mentzer and other followers.  He was HUGE and he discovered that to make even bigger gains, the trick was to do less workouts in a week as opposed to more.  He would do an 8-20 minute workout and then rest for anything from 5-7 days minimum.  He devised this program from his own personal experiments into strength gains and by accident.  This is him here:

Impressive huh?!?  The problem with having a higher fat to muscle ratio is your more prone to gaining weight at a drop of a hat.  When you have a higher msucle to fat ratio, it is the opposite.  You burn 45 calories for every pound of extra muscle you gain.  therefore all it takes is keeping that muscle mass when your there and that is easy peasy according to this guy.  Hence the reason I chose body building as a means to geting fit.  It means as I get fitter, I can eat pretty much what I want without really worrying about whether it will go to my hips.  Your metabolism is far more switched on with a higher muscle mass.  I can tell you, I am not going to complain about going to the gym once a week (if the novelty ever wears off that is---I am hooked on the high I get from lifting!) because one hour out of my week will be a pleasure to do in order to keep trim. ;)
