POSITIVE experience with daughter’s surgery

Hi, Bonnie-

My daughter (SWCAH) had the surgery in Jan. 1999 at 6 mos. of age and everything turned out great.  I know how difficult your decision has been - I struggled with all the same feelings.  Her clitoris was very enlarged and she also required vaginoplasty at the same time as she had a urogenital sinus and was urinating through her vagina.  Our excellent surgeon built a "wall" inside to separate the vaginal and urethra and then removed the extra clitoral skin without touching the nerves inside.  The extra skin was removed and the clitoral nerves were tucked back inside - all nerve endings remained intact.  She recovered from the surgery within about 2 days - she was crawling around and didn’t seem to have pain after the first day.  Her labia/clitoris now look just like any other little girl’s - there is very little scarring, which will not be visible at all once her pubic hair grows in.  I was very concerned that she would have no clitoral sensation, that sex would be excrutiating for her - all the things you worry about before going ahead with this surgery.  She will be 5 in June, and I can tell you that I don’t worry about that anymore. As any young child will do, she occasionally touches her private area in the bath tub, and when I have asked her about it she has told me that it "tickles" or that it "feels nice".  I share this information ONLY in the hopes that it eases some of your concern.  If you have any questions you would like to ask, please feel free to email me.  My prayers are with you and I believe in your decision to have the surgery.  I have never regretted my decision for a second.
