LauraWe had the pharmacy mix up a salt water solution. So many parts water so many parts salt. They can do this for you if you ask your doctor to prescribe it. (insurance may not pay for it because it is not a drug) OR you can buy the tablets they use and make it up yourself. Pretty easy. We would drop so many ml’s of the salt and water solution into a two ounce bottle of milk. I would make sure she drank that down, then I would breast feed. This way I knew she was getting her daily recommendation for salt. We just kept trying different measurements of the solution to see just how much she would tolterate until we found an amount she was comfortable with. She gagged the first time we gave it to her. But we eventually played with it and found the perfect amount. She took it happily.
I see others feel salt is not needed. Please remember this is a message board. You are speaking to many different people from ALL around the world. Every doctor has a way of doing things for THEIR patients. Every patient is different. They can have different needs than your daughter. I have always inquired here, taken what I have read, and discussed in in great length with my daughter’s endocrinologist. (and have read some great advice that has saved my daughter’s life) Then her endo. and I have decided what to do as a team. We have a great endo. From what I understand, salt is a necessity to all salt wasters. Some are severe salt wasters, some are not. Some may not require salt because they are getting it in their Florinef and are extremely mild salt wasters. My endo. says Florinef has salt qualities. BUT my daughter is a severe salt waster, therefore she needed addtional salt in her diet. We did the salt solution until she was able to eat table food. She took a bottle a bit longer because of it but she is fine today. No trama from drinking a bottle past the "required time" of bottle feeding. I was also comfortable with the salt solution administered to her. I felt this helped her when she was sick. Especially with not dehydrating as much. Keeping that sodium level up there. Good luck.
