Questions about bloodwork and precocious puberty
Jun. 4th, 2003   6:54pm

I posted recently about my 7 year old daughter starting to develop pubic hairs and a few other signs of early puberty.  We got the results back from her blood tests today.  I am so confused about what is considered "normal" ranges and wanted input from all of you as to what your doctor considers "normal".  He said her 17-ohp is considerably elevated but that everything else falls in the normal range although they did not provide me with what those ranges are.  Her 17- OHP was 4200 ng/dL, the normal to our doc is 390 ng/dL.  Her other levels were as follows: androstendione 79 ng/dL, DHEA 60 ng/dL, DHEA sulfate less than 2 ng/dL, Testosterone 10 ng/dL and Free testosterone 0.7 pg/mL.
He told me at our last appointment that after the bloodwork results were in we would run more tests (which we will be doing in about a week to 2 weeks) and go from there.  We are increasing her cortef by 2.5 mg per day but this seems a very small amount considering how high her 17-OHP is.  He stated that what she is going through right now is considered "false puberty" and that it will fairly soon (probably within a year) trigger actual puberty.  We’ll consider our treatment options in about 2 weeks or so.  She is such a small little girl and is projected to be short (like her mommy :)  ) but this would take so much off of her height.
We’re just trying to make sense of things.  This is a situation I don’t think I was quite prepared for.  I would appreciate anyone’s input on this. Also any input on additional tests we should run.  And thanks to all who answered my previous postings!  :)  Your input was extremely helpful!

Thanks!
