Anne-MarieBrenda,
You sound quite worried. Hardly suprising really. I hate it when that happens, and the Doctors don’t even help because it isn’t as if they discuss what we should be expecting or aiming for where reference ranges are concerned. It’s only recently when I have been taking blood spots that we are really seeing more of the 17 OHP and how it varies throughout the day even. When I’m done with profiling and we have the results I’ll try to post them out of interest for you anyway.
10’000 ng/dl does sound high but I am wondering what it is meant to be for a 15 yo at this point as obviously he is well into puberty at aged 15 yo and at that point, and I always assumed that the levels will be much higher anyway. Certainly not between 20-50 nmol/L or 500-1000 ng/dl.
When Ashley’s were 15’000 ng/dl or thereabouts the other year, our Endo at the time said that they were only as high as the average males levels 17 OHP levels? So I expect they do climb a little when puberty starts. Have you asked them what they are aiming for Brenda? I think the whole reference range thing is quite an interesting topic really because although they say a good range for small children is 500-1000 ng/dl obviously this changes as they grow and it would be interesting at this point to hear from parents who have kids at aged 14, 15 and 16 and have them post about what is considered an good 17 OHP level for them by their Doctor.
