My son had surgery yesterday.

  His Endo sent a letter to me and to the surgeon stating what would be required before during and after the surgery as far as medications. For example, we doubled his cortef the day beforesurgery and now, post surg. we are tripling the cortef.

 Here’s the interesting part. The anesthesiologist must have gone to medical school twice because he felt it important enough to tell me that my CAH child did NOT really need solu-cortef or the equiv. of solu-cortef in an IV during surgery.  Seems he is up on the latest info in the endo world and that life saving IV solu-cortef just isn’t needed in this easy one hour procedure  ... it would be needed for open heart surgery or brain surgery.  ( can you hear the sarcasm and anger) 

 After got over the shock of what he was saying I kindly let him know that WE would not be taking that risk today.  I almost demanded another anesthesiologist and in retrospect I wish I had.. but at the time I didnt want to anger anyone about to cut or care for my child. I don’t know that there was another anesthesiologist to take over and just because he might be a $!*% outside the OR with the parents.....

  He was very good in the OR with my son.  ( I was able to go into the OR with him til he fell asleep. )

 But then he blew it again in the post op area. His "people skills" are lacking.  

--- side note..... the hospital just called as a follow up check....... I asked what the anesthesiologists name was.... had to describe his build and features.... nurse wasn’t sure til I told her what the issue was.... then she was not suprised at all at which doctor it was..... hmmmmmm.  Not just me I guess.

 Moral of the story............. having your endo consult with and educate your operating doctor is a GOOD and NEEDED idea. By the way..... the doctor doing the surgery is THE BEST. He is that rare person that is excellent in his field and with the patients and with the parents.
