Florinef manufacturer change
Aug. 1st, 2003   12:08pm

When I picked up my son’s prescriptions yesterday, the florinef had changed. He used to get a .1 mg white, round tablet. "Squibb" was printed on it - I am not sure if that was the manufacturer or not.

Now the tablet is manufactured by Barr labs. It is yellow and oblong, still .1mg.  Also they are referring to it as "fludrocortisone" rather than Florinef. My understanding is that fludrocoritisone is the natural substance the body makes, similar to saying cortisol. While Florinef was the synthetic, similar to saying hydrocortisone. Or is Florinef just a brand name?

Does anyone know if there are different kinds of fludrocortisone? I want to make sure this isn’t a switch of meds like say a hydrocortisone to cortisone acetate, dex, etc. Is one fludrocortisone the same as any other?

Has anyone else had this change made? Any issues with it? (I normally wouldn’t be concerned but I think I am still scarred by the defective liquid Cortef problem of several years ago).

Thanks in advance.
