ToniI find it rather hilarious, that someone who posts as ’Must be said’, ’To Devastated’ etc, to protect their identity is saying we must walk proud and tall, be open and wear CAH badges (if necessary) yet is not even prepared to put their name to posts on a support group messageboard!
Whilst I agree publicity can be advantageous, CAH is rarely reported in medically correct terms, giving a balanced account of the condition and journalists are really only looking for sensationalism which sells magazines/tabloids and the ambiguity of the sex, which can occur in CAH is what they focus on, not what I consider the most serious aspect of the condition - it is potentially fatal! Do our children deserve to be exploited in order for their pockets to be lined? I have not seen the article in question so cannot really comment on the content but an article did appear in a UK magazine recently entitled ’Born between the sexes’, which made me cringe! I also know of one parent of a son with CAH who was devastated by the article as she was approached in the playground by another mother, shouting ’ So J... is really a girl is he?’. Obviously a very ignorant woman, whose son was actually responsible for bullying the boy in question but unfortunately she focused entirely on the title of this article and not the medical facts, which ordinary people do not usually take the trouble to try and understand, unless they are directly involved with someone affected. Educating the public is not an easy task!
