re: School Info needed!

Hi Valerie.  The Christian school I have my girls in does the same thing since there is a prison not to far away, and will lock down in the event of an earthquake, etc.  I had to have a meeting with the school officials regarding this because they told me that the doors would be closed, no one to come in and no one to come out until the lockdown was over.  Of course this has made me very nervous because they sent me a letter stating that since they were not medically trained that they were not allowed to give any mediciations, or, inject her should she need it!!!!!!!!!!!  There is a trauma nurse there on staff, but only part time 5 days a week who would be able to administer meds, but what if he isn’t there when a lockdown occurs?  Of course, I don’t think for a second that the staff would not take care of her, as they also requested I bring in a kit with her medicine and dosage instructions.  I got one of those vinyl lunch bags and put everything down in it wrote what it was and who it belonged to on the front of it and they locked it up inside her classroom. I also made a binder with information on CAH, how to give the injection and her med doses and schedule for them and gave it to the nurse who in turn educated the staff about CAH in a separate meeting.  Christi’s teacher told me she gives injections to an aunt of hers and was completely comfortable with giving injections and the staff had a meeting to make everyone aware of her condition and the need for an injection in the event of an emergency.  I know it is easier for me at this point as she stays in one class the entire day, is there a central location for meds for your son, and in the event of a lockdown would they be able to retrieve them?  This is my first experience with schools and the medication issues and I am saddened that we as parents have to fight so hard for our children to attend school.  Your school has to have at least one diabetic child, or a child that needs medications like your son.  Have you asked the officials what the plan of action is for those children?  Keep pressing Valerie, the squeaky wheel gets the oil and they are going to have to have some plan in place for him.  Don’t give up!
