Jacob was born with severe hypospadius..

The way it was explained and from what I’ve been able to learn on my own there are different severities of hypospadius, the urethra opening can be found instead of at the tip of the penis ,, lower on the shaft of the penis sometimes just at the base of the penis and in Jacob’s case his urethra opening was under his scrotal sack. The surgery consisted of them going in and corecting the urethra bringing it up to the tip of his penis..

He has a wonderfull Urologist who thankfully works with his Endo on other CAH patients born with abnormal genitils and was very aware of his medical needs..

 

To go back 3 years to when Jacob was born our local hospital misdiagnosed my son as ambiguous, it wasnt until the chromosone test, ultrasound test, blood test, u name it.. in a University  Hospital in Syracuse, NY that we learned our little guy was never ambiguous, there was no uterus, no female genital parts what so ever but because of the urethra opening below his scrotal sack and there lack of knowledge on CAH, the effects on the fetus in utero and the hypospadius.. resulted in us having to be told at birth, Congratulations its a girl, but wait no it’s a boy in the span of 8 hours our little Emily Marie was then Jacob Thomas and then because our local hospital was so unsure we were told not to name the baby just yet, think of a nickname that would fit both a boy and a girl because thats what we had..  Im telling you it was a nightmare. After deciding to have him transferred to a larger hospital we waited for test, we met an Endo doctor who immediately set our worries asside and told us in fact he was a boy, go ahead and give the little guy a name he has hypospadius.. exhale.. it was however very difficult because for 8 or so hours we had our little Emily, and when it was all sorted out the next day, we lost Emily but gained Jacob..

My only wish is that if the doctors don’t really know that they immediately consult a better authority on the matter as to not have the parents flip flopped over there brand new babies identity.
