SandraHi Hope,
I have 3 boys and one on the way. My youngest (2yrs old) has SV CAH and my little bun in the oven does as well. I started taking the dex as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I stopped taking it at about 11 or 12 weeks when I found out it was a boy. It took a little longer to find out if he had CAH or not but the dex was not needed after we found out the sex. I had a CVS at 10 weeks and asked for a FISH test so we could know the sex in 24 hours.
The CVS was a piece of cake. I didn’t feel any pain. They went through the belly not vaginally with the needle. The dex was not as much fun. My biggest complaint was the weight gain in the beginning. The excess hunger didn’t curb until about a month after I stopped the dex. I would recommend not stopping the dex cold turkey, which I was told I could do by two different doctors. I did have terrible migraines after stopping the dex for about 3 or 4 days. I have talked to a few other mom’s who took the dex and also complained of migraines. Regardless of the side effects, it takes about a month or so to get over them. The effect on my little guy, I don’t know yet. I am being followed by a high risk Ob who does an ultrasound once a month to check on him. I was a little paranoid having taking a heavy duty drug that he really didn’t need. So far he just looks like a big baby. They think he will be over 9 pounds. Even with all the worry that I went through, the extra weight and the migraines I have to tell you that I would take the dex again in a heartbeat. Since this is my 4th boy...I done having babies...but if I had to do it again, I would.
To me the benefits of taking it outweighed the risks. Now, my little one isn’t born yet. I’m hoping that it will be an uneventful delivery and that he will be fine. I’ll have to fill everyone in after he’s here.
In the meantime, enjoy your little one.
