That is a good question!
I have not had personal experience of this, but logically I think, the ACTH stim test would be of limited value in the immediate newborn period, if pre-natal Dex had been given to the mother.
They could wait a few days before doing the test; but this presents the obvious problems of cortisol ’withdrawal’, resulting in potential insufficiency for the baby, if the baby’s adrenal function has already been suppressed by maternal Dex. My guess is, that in controlled and well monitored hospital/nursery surroundings this is probably the normal procedure.
Can anybody who has been in this situation comment?
