re: With the flu season upon us...

Wonderful timing on this question, especially as I just read that 4 children in CO have died in the last week of complications of flu.  My 9 year old SWCAH daughter began vomiting early last Saturday morning.  We gave her an injection of solu-cortef, but she continued to vomit, so a few hours later we headed to the E.R. with her, thinking that she just needed some IV fluids to get her "over the hump".  After a few hours, it was decided to admit her overnight for observation as she still hadn’t kept anything down and she was spiking a fever of 104!  This was the first time she had been admitted for illness in her 9 years - a far cry from what we expected when she was diagnosed at 2 weeks.  We have had several E.R. visits over the years.

This board has been a wonderful source of information and I guess one of the most important things I have learned here is to be aggressive, seek treatment, and don’t apologize for it.  I believe that to over-react is far better than not reacting quickly enough or letting people brush you aside and experiencing the worst as many parents on this board have - that of losing a child to adrenal crisis.  We, as parents, have to be our child’s advocate.

And thankfully, we have a great ped endo who has never treated us like we over-react.  She always calls the E.R. to give them the word that we’re on our way and we get immediate attention.  And I really don’t mind educating the staff and residents about the condition.  They see so much and have to deal with so much, that there is no way they can all be the "experts" that we are!

Thanks for bringing up the subject!  It is an important one~
