Hi Laura - I don’t post as often as I used to as my CAH-SW son is now 11 and I don’t have as many questions as I used to, but there are several subjects that I always feel compelled to respond to. Sweating is one of them! From around the age of 4-5 or so, my son would sweat like you just wouldn’t believe. Very little activity and he would be drenched. He would wake up every morning with his hair sopping wet. His older sister was not like that, so I assumed it had something to do with his CAH, but the endo’s insisted it did not. Interestingly enough, this started happening after he had an adrenal crisis. We found him in the midst of the crisis at 5am one morning and it was extraordinarily frightening. When I mentioned the sopping wet head to the endo’s, they said that was common because he was in a state of shock. Soon after, they upped his meds and the head sweating began continued for about one year. It ws so bad that people were constantly questioning me about it. But still, the endo’s said it didn’t pertain to his CAH. That is when I started doing research on my own (not an easy task, as I didn’t have a computer then - you parents are so lucky with this website for support and info!) and questioned as to whether he was over-suppressed or not. I look back at photos now of him at that age, and he was so OBVIOUSLY over-suppressed, but I had no idea and the endo’s kept saying he was chubby because I was feeding him to much and his head was sweating because he needed more exercise!!! Anyway, to make a long story short, when I convinced the endo to reduce his meds and see what happens, he thinned right out and the head sweating came to an almost immediate halt. He has never had that problem again. As a matter of fact, I have noticed that in the past couple of years, he seems to hardly sweat at all. I’m beginning to wonder if that isn’t a sign of something?!? Even in the midst of summer, he will complain of being hot and tired and seem wiped out, but he will not sweat. (Perhaps it is genetic? I have a sister that can go for a 3mile run and come back like she just stepped out of the shower, me---I sweat just climbing a flight of stairs!) I always worry about him becoming dehydrated so I am constantly on him about drinking enough, but still no sweat. Go figure! So, the moral of my story is to make sure she isn’t oversuppressed.
