For her tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy and for her arthroscopic knee surgery, my daughter received a stress dose (100 mg Solucortef) that morning prior to surgery, she had it drip in her IV during surgery, and triple dose after surgery, weaning her back to her normal dose over a few days.  I did have to fight with the hospital staff just prior to her knee surgery because they didn’t read her chart which said it was required and they figured since I had administered the shot that morning, that was sufficient.  I practically followed them into the OR, but it got their attention and they did look again at the chart and saw that it was necessary.  My advice is just to be sure they do what is required!
