When in doubt- give the shot- a lesson we would like to share!

What an EXHAUSTING day!  I wanted to share with all of you the lesson we learned today.  We have been down many roads of every kind of illness you can imagine (Our 7 year old was just in the hospital last Monday with a stomach virus).  Today was very different for us, the illness did not progress as it normally does and the important lesson here, is that we followed our gut instinct and probably saved our daughter’s life.  We have 2 daughters with ssw cah (7 & 5).  I took our 5 year old to the ped this morning for high fever, coughing and wheezing.  She has a sinus infection and bronchitis.  Her 103 fever hung on for a long time despite ibuprofen, tepid bath, breathing treatment at the peds.  After several triple doses, my husband and I decided to call the endo.  He was at the hospital all day so I had to talk to a nurse practitioner who told me there was absolutely no reason to give the shot.  That it would have no benefit on how she was feeling or on her fever, since we were orally increasing her meds.  I told her that I was going to ignore what she had to say and give the shot, could she please pass that info along to the endo?  She was shocked.  She must not remember me (I have no problem letting them know my opinions in regards to treatment for my girls).  Would you believe that we woke Ellie up (she’d been on the couch sleeping since 10 this morning) at 3:30.  By 3:40 (SWEAR TO GOD!) she was off the couch coloring and drinking wanting to know when she could have chicken noodle soup.  By 4 her 103 fever was 100!  Didn’t need the shot my @$$!  Remind me to call the endo tomorrow and tell him this story and then tell the nurse practitioner.  I wonder if she even knows what CAH is!?  My biggest regret?  That we didn’t do it sooner but I’m glad we did it when we did.  She is going to bed tonight, fever free and feeling much better.  She actually asked me around 3 when she was going to get her solu-cortef shot because she knew it would make the room stop spinning.  Listen to your kids and yourself.  You cannot overreact with CAH!  I wanted to share with all of you- when in doubt- follow your gut instinct!  You cannot hurt them by giving the shot!  I hope that someone can learn from our situation.

PS  Don’t leave the shot in the car like I did in freezing temperatures!  Luckily we had back up shots in the house.  I don’t know what we would have done if I didn’t!  I guess there are 2 lessons learned here!  :)
