Just a word of caution - even if your child is diagnosed a non-salt waster, still keep the shot on hand and don’t be afraid to use it!  My child was diagnosed as a non-salt waster, simple virilizing CAHer when she was 3.  Well, we have given the shot on 2 occasions.  On the first occasion, she was really lethargic, had been vomitting during the night and had not told anyone (she was at a friend’s house and simply went into the bathroom and spent most of the night their - she was only 5 and didn’t realize she needed to tell someone).  The second time it was another vomitting/high fever illness a few years later and we knew she was sick earlier on.  Both times we gave the shot at home BEFORE taking her to the dr. office (across the street from the hospital).  Had she not responded quickly, we would have gone directly to the ER.

I am passing this on only because I have heard/read people say that non-salt wasters don’t have crises.  Simply not true!  Also, even though all the testing done at diagnosis showed my daughter to be a non-salt waster, she DOES lose salt to some degree.  We always suspected that because of the way she reacts to heat, but it was confirmed when the dr. took her off of florinef a year ago for a few days.  Luckily at that time we were able to give the florinef and a bowl of the saltiest canned soup I had in the house (and let her salt it freely) and she bounced back pretty quickly.
