ElizabethAmy,
My husband and I have just been able to get off Medicaid but our daughter was on Medicaid after her birth because I was able to obtain Pregnant Women’s Medicaid throughout my pregnancy. Our daughter was covered for her first year automatically but we did not renew due to a change in our financial and insurance situaitons (THANK GOODNESS!!) but the help that they were able to give us through our first year is something that I will never forget. I honestly don’t know what we would have done without their help.
Basically you just need to contact your local department of social services and explain that you want to apply to have your child covered by medicaid. There is a income limit and some states have different levels. I believe that in our state the first level in which the child is covered fully is that you need to make less than $1200 a month, then the next step is a relatively low copay you need to make less than $1800 a month (these are all based on supporting a 3 person family) and then above that some states sometimes offer a program for children with chronic medical conditions (not disability as I saw listed below but an entirely different program).
Good luck! Please tell your entire family congratulations!!
