Blood Type and how it affects the severity of CAH.

Has anyone read the book by Dr D’Adamo about blood types and eating right for your blood type.  I just got through reading the book about three weeks ago and I’m blood type A (non secretor I suspect).  I’ve looked through Ashley’s records but cannot find his blood type.  Would you believe it, all these blood tests and no one ever bothered to check his blood type and have it on record, or atleast it isn’t anywhere on mine that’s for sure.

Anyway, after studying the book I read that people with blood type A have naturally higher cortisol levels than any of the other ABO types.  Not only this but they have smaller amounts of stomach acid in comparison to say a blood type O whom have the lowest cortisol levels and on top of that, blood type A have the thickest blood compared to type O’s that have the thinnest type of blood and for whom clotting problems are common.

You may well be asking why this would affect a CAH child until you realise that if the cortisol levels are generally higher and they are more susceptible to stress, then they obviously need higher doses of replacement cortisol.  Whereas a type O child may not need quite as high a dose and be a much more unstressed child.

In raising the cortisol levels above that of what they should be, the blood becomes more acidic and therefore the child does not get a good uptake of calcium into the bone.  That’s nothing that we don’t already know since a lot of our kids have problems with growth and some have even been susceptible to fractures.

After reading the book, I really believe that stress and bad diet will and can make your childs growth a lot harder to control than if their diet where balanced more to their blood type and the child’s exposrue to stress where reduced considerably.  Obviously the latter is hard because even physical stress can throw things out and yet we can’t expect them to skip PT.  But diet is within all our means to change and manipulate.    You should get the book and read it.  Things magically slot together like a jig saw puzzle when you start to read about how various foods affect the blood.  It’s quite an interesting read.
