Our insurance paid for "any dr/hospital or specialist who was contracted with the insurance at the time of care". At that time, we had Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Dr. Poppas, the pediatric urologist and Dr. New (as well as Cornell hospital and its anesthesia dr’s) were all covered. We had a $200 copay for her being admitted, and a $20 specialist fee for the anesthesia dr. For the hospital stay and the surgery itself the insurance required a pre authorization and Dr. News office (for her part of the care) and Dr. Poppas (for his part) got the preauthorizations taken care of themselves. I just contacted BCBS myself to double check it was all ok after the appts were all set up. While we were there Dr New’s office did some blood work on us and our daughter for genetic purposes. At that time it was part of a grant they were under for CAH study. None of that went through insurance as I recall. We stayed at a hotel arranged by the Cares Foundation. Kelley was so great in negotiating a lesser rate for our stay. She even came up from Jersey to meet us and check on our daughter. Now I think there are even more hotel options for your stay. The place we stayed was a 5 minute walk to the hospital. The hospital had some decent food and there are great deli’s close by if you want a change. Having the surgery done is a tough decision for some and making all those arrangements is a big deal. For us, it all went very smoothly, we knew we were getting excellent care and experienced drs. It was important to get someone who knew what they were doing and not just guessing or reading directions from a textbook. I wish you all the best and please let me know if you have any other questions.Natalie A
