I’m in high school, so it’s probably a bit different for me, but I ALWAYS carry a Nalgene water bottle with me.  For older kids, the big bottle is ideal, but they also make a smaller (small-neck) bottle that works for younger kids or kids who have easier access to a water fountain.  Since these things are indestructible, they work for years, and for the fashion conscious, they come in almost every color.
