re: Mood swings in toddlers

This question comes up frequently on this board. Endocrinologist argue and say it has nothing to do with the steriods they take. I disagree. Also I was always thinking about sugar levels being low too. In this particular case I do see constipation as a big culprit. I know I get cranky if I get constipated (lol) And it can hurt for kids! You may need to get her a suppository from the ped. if she is THAT constipated.

Ok so constipation aside, toddlers can be toddlers. So if you mix the regular toddler temper with the just not feeling well because their getting too much of their meds or too little can make a big difference in behavior. My daughter is now 6 and a half. (gotta put the and half or I am in big trouble) When she was a toddler and she was outside in the summer playing every once in a while  she would have these breakdowns. She criiiiiiied. No consoling her at all. She got mad and weepy. Finally we would bring her in, lay her on the couch and give her some milk. (another milk aholic) No lie, once she sipped that last sip of milk she would sit up and smile and become the sweet child she was before the breakdown. My husband and I would be totally baffled at the complete change in her. Now mind you she wasn’t crying FOR MILK. She was just crying because something triggered these tears. And not fake tears. So our theory was maybe her sugar was low in the sun and she needed this recharge. As she got older we would give her juice or some snack to curb this breakdown and again, she would become a different child.

IN REGARDS TO MEDS BEING OFF. This is where endos. argue. I will fight this to the end. After my daughter is stressed dosed, (toddler or not) she has some breakdowns afterward. Especially if there involves a hospital stay. She used to lash out when she was younger but has worked at that and maturity has helped. She would go from running in circles, to falling apart in tears. It is painful to watch.

Also I have heard some children that are OVERsuppressed OR UNDERsuppressed has these mood swings. I agree totally. So you just never know. Hang in there. Get her poopin’ again and see if that helps. Let us know. GOOD LUCK!
