AndyOur 8 year old SWCAH son has always seemed to have a sign on his back that says "viruses and bacterial infections are welcome." We have averaged 3 to 4 ER trips per year since birth as he just cannot seem to handle any infection/virus at all without vomiting/adrenal crisis. Against the advice of our Endo, we have always tried to shelter him to the point of becoming GERMOPHOBES. Our Endo’s theory is to expose him as a normal child so the immune system will develop. (easy for her to say as she isn’t the one who has to give him injections and stay up with him all night) Who knows what is best.
Although he has never been in day care as his mother is a stay-at-home mom and considering our germophobia, he still seemed to get more than his share of colds, flus, etc. And they are not easily treated, often involving the ER. And, to make matters worse, kindergarten made matters even worse. However, (knock wood) 1st grade seems to be better.
I was told that because of soem extra problems some SWCAH kids have with their adrenal cortex or adrenal medula (I can’t remember which) they can’t handle infection well. (study is underway at NIH regarding this I believe)
All I can say is hang in there as this too shall pass. Just don’t EVER hesitate to give that injection and make that quick trip to the ER. And, let him be a "child with a medical condition, rather than "a medical condition with a child."
God Bless,
Andy
