Anne-MarieI think someone brought up the fact they were having thydroid problems last week and wondering if there was any connection between that and CAH?
I do know that anyone whom is overly stressed will have raised estrogen levels and an imblanace between estrgoen and progesterone. This can also undermine their thydroid function. Thydroid disease sometimes can go missed for quite some time until it becomes serious and often disease is caused before diagnosis. People whom have hypothydroidism are also likely to have hypoglycemic episodes. You need a sensible balanced diet without refined or processed foods and also avoid simple carbs. They cause a lot of problems with insulin and glucose levels and lead to hypoglycemic episodes.
I don’t think it is so much a connection with CAH carrier status, but having a child with a medical condition is not exactly stress free. Continued stress over time will pre dispose one to diseases such as this. Not to mention a weak immune system. Also being on a diet like Atkins where the carbs are too low may predispose you to thydroid disease they feel now. If you are blood type A, your cortisol levels will be slightly higher from day to day than any other blood group. Type A’s are more prone to stress related diseases and have a higher risk of getting cancer related diseases so it pays to find some ways of de stressing and finding ways to handle stress. I’ve also heard that the herb "Holy Basil" is good for lowering elevated stress hormones. Look at reducing body fat to within healthy guidelines also as excess body fat will raise estrogen levels. Excercise will also reduce estrogen levels and cortisol levels. Work at natural ways to solve your health problems. I think most people on thydroid drugs could probably reverse their thydroid problems if they took this advice. I think drugs should be a last resort if things have not imporved from making these lifestyle changes. That’s mainly because they cannot always get the levels right. It’s like cortisol dosing. It’s never perfect and unfortunately there are side effects and it could affect your health in other ways.
