Anne-MarieI went for a second opinion this week in New York and came out more confused than ever but was told that it couldn’t hurt to have them biopsied. This endo also said that this could be caused by having TOO MUCH estrogen in my body - HuH?
Due to another problem altogether (or so I thought) I went to see my OBGYN today. She told me that the problems I exhibited could be due to NOT ENOUGH estrogen - Double HuH? She ran a test for that and I will get the results back on Monday. If it is not that, she wants to do a biopsy to see if it might be cancerous.
Interesting that you should mention this Lynne because this is one that really tickles me. You see what one Doctor will describe as lack of estrogen another Doctor can describe as excess estrogen. The confusion arises because in all this what really counts is that the estrogen that your body makes is not "unnopposed estrogen." By this I mean that for however much estrogen your body makes, there is an equal amount of progesterone that balances it all. Because if this does not occur, then this is what is termed "estrogen dominance." As you can appreciate that can very well mean low estrogen, but that also sadly the progesterone levels are much much lower also than they need to be, and what little estrogen you DO have goes unopposed. As explained this is what pre disposes you to cancers.
Very confusing, but I hope it makes a little more sense, because the short fall between the two hormones is actually what causes menopausal symptoms and other health problems for women and men. Not lack of estrogen surpisingly as they intially thought. Thats why many Doctors gave women estrogen replacement at or prior to onset of menopause. The problem being then was that is pre disposed them to cancer of the uterus and the breast. When this came to their attention they then popped a progestin in with the mix supposing that this would oppose the estrogen replacement making this safe for women. As I have explained though, this could not probably address the matter of unnopposed esrogen in full as it should do because like I said, synthetic progestins cannot mimic natural progesterone as they don’t have end molecules. They only do part of a job and at the end of the day, it is going to take another few years and ruin many womens health before they get to find this out I’d imagine or admit that such hormone replacement is not the way to go. Meanwhile many women will still have estrogen dominance but LESS natural progesterone in their bodies to oppose that estrogen they are taking due to the progestins. So as a consequence, I am betting that the situation or that cocktail that some women take now is very much worse than just supplementing with estrogen alone.
