I’m 29 with swcah and I just want to let the parents know something I’ve noticed with my treatment, something you may want to watch for in your kids with cah. I’m 5’3 and around the time that I was 14 I weighed about 96 lbs. My weight had always been pretty low like that, from about age 15 on I began gaining weight very rapidly. I ended up over 200 pounds. Although I never felt I was eating much more than would be normal. When I was at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh they would always say it was because I ate too much and watched TV too much(they said this was a problem with teenagers) so they sent someone in to talk to me about it. They said it wasn’t because of the cah. Recently my current endo. had me tested for insulin resistance, she said long term use of the cortisone steroids could cause that. After the test they said it was impaired glucose tolerance(which is one step away from diabetes). They put me on a medicine called Glucophage(a diabetes medicine). I’ve lost about 32 pounds since december!! No more weight gain at all!! They told me to limit carbs, all I’ve really done is limit soda pop and fruit juice. As far as eating, I’ve changed nothing. I go back to the endo. at the beginning of may, so I’d like to see what she says about all this. I just wanted to let everyone know that if unusual weight gain is an issue, you may want to ask your endo. about insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance. I think all along this was due to cah or the treatment, it just wasn’t addressed properly until now.Brenda Thomas
