Hi Megan.  Sorry for your pain.  I hate to say it but you just described the sensations I had when I was in labor with my first child.  I had fibroidal tumors that had developed from infertility drugs taken for IVF.

During the pregnancy the hormones seemed to almost feed the fibroids and, somehow, they had wrapped themselves around the ureter to my right kidney.

During labor I kept complaining of right flank pain and my doctor gave me a poke and just about had to get me down off the ceiling - and I was already on lots of pain meds!!!!

He felt that it was a kidney stone (instead of the fibroids) and pumped 20 liters of fluid into me to try to flush the (imaginary) stone.  Since the right kidney was obstructed and the left kidney couldn’t work fast enough to compensate for both, I developed hydro-nephrosis of the right kidney as well as heart damage and preclampsia.  It was close, but we both  made it and my daughter is 10 years old now - and she has a 9 year old brother who surprised us all on his own - no IVF.

Basically,  if the doctor would have been able to get a good scan of my kidney, he would have been able to see that there was no stone and then (allegedly) he would have noticed the fibroids.  He said that because my daughter was still on board he couldn’t get a clear view and it was a 50/50 shot it was a stone.

So, the moral of the story is - get a good doctor, a good scan, a good second opinion and good luck (;>).
