re: Has anyone heard of a link between CAH / cortef / speech disfluency?

Hi Sandra:

My 4 year old son has pretty severe speech problems.  He actually has 3 different things going on - he has no control over his jaw movement (so his jaw kind of moves when it is not supposed to - I know it is hard to visualize), he has problems with his tongue movement (he can’t touch the top of his mouth or move it side to side on command), and he has a open space so that when he closes his mouth there is a big gap between his upper and lower teeth (allowing the tongue to go through when he is talking).  He doesn’t have any physical problems with his mouth, other than the big gap between the upper and lower teeth.  He has been in speech therapy since he was 2 because he also didn’t really start talking/babbling until he was almost 2 years old.

He has improved alot over the past 2 years but I notice that he tends to "get sloppy" when he is really tired, really excited about something or his meds are a little off.

He wasn’t diagnosed with CAH until he was 3 years old so there is a part of me that wonders if all of his delays are because he went undiagnosed for so long (although he had a lot of medical problems).  Of course I can’t get anyone to confirm that that would be a possibility.

Best wishes,

Kristin
