CAH was diagnosed for our 10-day-old baby boy on the basis that the steroid treatment was working. Once he was stabilised, he was then taken off medication and monitored. When his levels went haywire again, medication was resumed. Genetic test results arrived later confirming his CAH.
He wasn’t premature, but obviously there was an expectation that his adrenals might start to kick in, i.e. that this was "a temporary insufficiency". There must have been other reported cases of this happening to support this expectation.
